Q: What impact does aging and stress have on the digestive system?
A: Stress can very often lead to lack of apetite and so weight loss. Or the other way round if people 'comfort eat'. [ One result of lack of food over a regular period could be an increase risk in excess acid in the stomach leading to heartburn or in severe cases irritation of the stomach lining which may increase chances of an ulcer. One of the main conditions that can arise due to stress affecting
the digestive system is Irritable Bowel Syndrome. One factor that does increase symptoms of Irritable Bowel is poor diet. Many people under stress with no apetite will fill up on high sugar snacks and these can irritate the bowel. In addition many people under stress don't sleep so top up on coffee/caffeine during the day. Caffeine is a bowel stimulant and does increase episodes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Apart from the digestive system, most areas of the body are affected and as the body is interconnected, stress can have a viral like affect on the whole body systems. ]
