At a microscopic level, muscle contraction occurs when the proteins within muscle fibers are able to shorten and generate force. This process involves a series of steps that are triggered by a nerve impulse, or action potential, which travels down the axon of a motor neuron and reaches the muscle fiber. When the action potential reaches the axon terminal, or end of the motor neuron, it triggers the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine diffuses across the synapse, or gap, between the axon terminal and the muscle fiber and binds to receptors on the surface of the muscle fiber. The binding of acetylcholine to the receptors causes ion channels in the muscle fiber to open, allowing positively charged ions such as sodium and potassium to flow into or out of the cell. This creates an electrical current that travels the length of the muscle fiber, causing it to depolarize. The depolarization of the muscle fiber triggers a series of structural changes within the muscle fibers that allow the proteins to shorten and generate force. These proteins, called myosin and actin, interact in a process called the sliding filament model. In this process, the myosin proteins bind to the actin proteins and use the energy from ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to "walk" along the actin filament, pulling it towards the center of the muscle fiber. As the actin filaments are pulled towards the center of the muscle fiber, the muscle fibers shorten, generating force. When the action potential ends and the muscle fiber repolarizes, the ion channels close and the muscle fiber returns to its resting state. The muscle can then relax and the myosin and actin proteins return to their original positions, ready to repeat the process when the next action potential arrives. This is how a muscle fiber is able to contract and generate force.
